Founded December 20, 1967 (originally Université d'Oran al-Saniya). The first university founded in Algeria after independence and the flagship of western Algeria. In 2014, the original University of Oran was split into University of Oran 1 (Ahmed Ben Bella, Es-Sénia campus) and University of Oran 2 (Ahmed Benahmed).
