Founded 1989 (chartered by Law No. 144 of 1989 of the Republic of Cyprus; opened 1992 — the FIRST PUBLIC UNIVERSITY of the Republic of Cyprus; previously Cypriots had to study abroad for higher education, primarily in Greece, the UK, or other countries). The Republic of Cyprus's FIRST PUBLIC UNIVERSITY and current flagship, located at the Aglantzia main campus in Nicosia. Chartered 1989 by Law No. 144 of 1989; opened for teaching 1992. Before UCY, Cypriots had to study abroad (primarily Greece, UK, USA) for higher education. ~7,500+ students across 8 faculties: Humanities, Pure and Applied Sciences, Economics and Management, Social Sciences and Education, Engineering, Letters, Medical School (added 2013), and Postgraduate Studies. Greek-medium primary instruction with growing English-medium programmes for international students. Member of the European University Association (EUA), Erasmus+ network, and the YUFE (Young Universities for the Future of Europe) alliance. Major regional research presence in the Eastern Mediterranean.
