Founded 1966 (chartered as Kuwait University by Amiri Decree No. 29 of 1966; opened October 1966 as the FIRST and FLAGSHIP public university in Kuwait — established 5 years after independence from British protection (1961); originally located at Shuwaikh campus, with the new Sabah Al-Salem University City inaugurated 2014-2019 in Shadadiya as the consolidated main campus). Kuwait's FIRST AND FLAGSHIP public university, chartered 1966 by Amiri Decree No. 29 of 1966 — established 5 years after Kuwait's independence from British protection on 19 June 1961. Originally located at Shuwaikh, Khaldiya, Kaifan, and Adailiya campuses. The new SABAH AL-SALEM UNIVERSITY CITY at Shadadiya — one of the largest single-site university construction projects in the Gulf region — was inaugurated 2014-2019 as the consolidated main campus. ~40,000+ students across 16 colleges: Arts, Sciences, Engineering and Petroleum (Kuwait's oil-economy context), Medicine (Faculty of Medicine), Law, Sharia and Islamic Studies, Allied Health Sciences, Architecture, Business Administration, Computing Sciences and Engineering, Dentistry, Education, Graduate Studies, Life Sciences, Pharmacy, and Social Sciences. Bilingual Arabic-English instruction with most STEM and business programmes English-medium. Member of the Association of Arab Universities (AArU) and the GCC University Federation. Kuwait University was severely damaged during the Iraqi occupation (1990-91) — campus buildings looted, archives destroyed, faculty displaced; full restoration took years.
