Chartered 3 December 1866 as SYRIAN PROTESTANT COLLEGE by American Presbyterian missionaries led by Daniel Bliss (first president). Renamed American University of Beirut 1920. ~9,000+ students on 73-acre Ras Beirut campus overlooking Mediterranean. 7 faculties. ENGLISH-MEDIUM, American liberal-arts curriculum. AUB has produced 7 Lebanese Prime Ministers + ~20 Lebanese Presidents/heads-of-state + countless Arab world leaders. CRITICAL CIVIL WAR CONTEXT: AUB was central to Lebanese Civil War 1975-1990 tragedy — Acting President MALCOLM KERR was ASSASSINATED on campus 18 January 1984 (shot by Islamic Jihad gunmen outside his office). Multiple AUB faculty killed/kidnapped during war (Frank Regier, David Dodge, Thomas Sutherland, others). 2020 BEIRUT PORT EXPLOSION (4 August 2020): AUB Medical Center suffered significant damage from 2,750-ton ammonium nitrate blast at port ~3km away; multiple staff and patients killed/injured. Pakistani + international student community.
