Founded 1977 (as a branch of the University of Madagascar); became independent university in 1988. Public regional university in Toliara (Tuléar) on the southwest coast of Madagascar, serving the Atsimo-Andrefana region. Originated 1977 as the Centre Universitaire Régional de Toliara, one of the six regional branches of the University of Madagascar; gained independent university status in 1988. Faculties span sciences, arts and human sciences, marine sciences (notably the Institut Halieutique et des Sciences Marines, a regional reference for marine research in the western Indian Ocean), and law.
