EXTRAORDINARY SPIRITUAL UNIVERSITY at LUMBINI — UNESCO World Heritage Site (1997), BIRTHPLACE OF GAUTAMA BUDDHA (Siddhartha Gautama, c. 563 BCE). Founded 2004 as specialised Buddhist studies university. ~2,000 students. CRITICAL PAKISTAN CONNECTION: Buddhism flourished in GANDHARA (modern Pakistani Peshawar/Taxila/Swat valley) for centuries — Taxila was a major Buddhist learning centre 5th c BCE to 5th c CE, contemporary with Nepali Buddhist development. Pakistani Gandhara Buddhist art (Greco-Buddhist) influenced South Asian Buddhism. LBU preserves this transnational South Asian Buddhist heritage. Includes monks from Asian Buddhist countries.
