Major private Protestant university in Dumaguete, Negros Oriental — the FIRST AMERICAN UNIVERSITY in the Philippines and the FIRST Protestant institution in the Philippines. Founded 28 August 1901 as the Silliman Institute by the Presbyterian Mission Board (USA) with a gift from American philanthropist Dr Horace Brinsmade Silliman of Cohoes, New York. Granted university status 1938. Affiliated with the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP). Colleges: Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Computer Studies, Education, Engineering and Design, Law (Silliman Law), Mass Communication, Nursing, Performing and Visual Arts, and the Divinity School (oldest Protestant seminary in the Philippines).
