Founded in 1290 by King Dinis, the University of Coimbra is Portugal's OLDEST university and one of the OLDEST UNIVERSITIES IN CONTINUOUS OPERATION IN THE WORLD. Its historic campus — including the magnificent Joanina Library (1717) and the Royal Palace — is a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE (2013). ~25,000 students. For centuries it was the principal university of the entire Portuguese-speaking world, educating elites from Brazil, Africa, and Asia. The founding member and namesake of the Coimbra Group of historic European universities. Central to Portuguese and Lusophone intellectual history; its student traditions (the black capes, the praxe, Fado de Coimbra) are iconic.
