Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa'e (UNTL / National University of East Timor)

Founded 2000 (chartered by UN UNTAET transitional administration as Timor-Leste's FIRST national university; founded just before May 2002 independence; only public university). TIMOR-LESTE'S ONLY NATIONAL PUBLIC UNIVERSITY. Chartered 2000 by UN TRANSITIONAL ADMINISTRATION IN EAST TIMOR (UNTAET) — the UN body that administered Timor-Leste from October 1999 (after Indonesian withdrawal) until 20 May 2002 independence. UNTL was founded as essential national institution preparing for independence. "TIMOR LOROSA'E" = "EAST TIMOR" in TETUM (Timorese national language, blend of Austronesian + Portuguese vocabulary). ~12,000+ students. 8 faculties including Faculty of Medicine (major Cuban medical training collaboration). Multi-medium: Portuguese + Tetum + some Indonesian continuation. CRITICAL CONTEXT: UNTL inherited buildings from Indonesian-era Universitas Timor Timur (UNTIM, 1986-1999) which was destroyed in Sept 1999 violence — UNTL physically rebuilt UNTIM's facilities.
