Chartered 1773 by SULTAN MUSTAFA III as IMPERIAL NAVAL ENGINEERING SCHOOL (Mühendishane-i Bahri-i Hümayun) — established to modernize Ottoman navy after 1770 Çeşme naval defeat. Mühendishane-i Berri-i Hümayun (land engineering) added 1795 by Sultan Selim III. Among WORLD'S OLDEST engineering universities (older than MIT 1861, Caltech 1891).
