AccreditationNational Council for Higher Education (NCHE), Republic of Uganda — established under the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 (UOTIA), operational from January 2003. NCHE is the national regulator responsible for licensing, accrediting, and supervising all higher-education institutions in Uganda. As of recent count, NCHE has accredited ~252 institutions. Located at Plot M834 Kigobe Road, Kyambogo, Kampala. The Ugandan HE sector operates under chartered (full status) and provisionally-licensed designations.
Founded 1922 (as Uganda Technical College, a small technical school); became Makerere College in 1949 (affiliated with University of London); part of the University of East Africa federation 1963-1970 (with University College Dar es Salaam and University College Nairobi); full independent Makerere University from 1970. Uganda's flagship and oldest university, located on Makerere Hill in Kampala. Founded 1922 as Uganda Technical College — a small technical school under the British Colonial Administration. Reorganised as Makerere College in 1949 with affiliation to the University of London. From 1963 to 1970, Makerere was part of the University of East Africa federation alongside University College Dar es Salaam (now UDSM, see UNI_0506) and University College Nairobi (now UoN). Became the fully independent Makerere University in 1970 after the dissolution of the federation. Among the oldest universities in Sub-Saharan Africa. 10 colleges, 35+ schools and institutes: Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Business and Management Sciences, Computing and Information Sciences, Education and External Studies, Engineering Design Art and Technology, Health Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Veterinary Medicine Animal Resources and Biosecurity, and the School of Law. ~35,000 students. Notable alumni include former Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere, former Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki, current Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, and Nobel laureate writer V.S. Naipaul (briefly). The 'Harvard of Africa' historical designation.
