Founded 1975 (chartered by PEOPLE'S DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF YEMEN — ONLY Marxist Arab state in history — as flagship of South Yemen socialist republic; merged into unified Yemen 1990). SOUTHERN YEMEN'S FLAGSHIP UNIVERSITY. Chartered 1975 by PEOPLE'S DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF YEMEN (PDRY, 1967-1990) — ONLY MARXIST ARAB STATE IN HISTORY! PDRY emerged from British Aden Colony 1967 + adopted Marxist-Leninist socialism with Soviet + East German support. Aden was Marxist Arab capital with female education champion (PDRY had progressive women's rights vs other Arab states). University of Aden was PDRY socialist intellectual flagship. ~25,000+ students. ⚠️ CRITICAL: Aden has been effectively GOVERNMENT-CONTROLLED capital since Houthis took Sana'a 2014.
