Cambodia's flagship and oldest modern university, located in Phnom Penh. Chartered 1960 as the Royal Khmer University by King Norodom Sihanouk during the Sangkum Reastr Niyum era. CLOSED 1975 under the Khmer Rouge — many faculty and students perished in the genocide. Reopened and gradually reconstituted from 1980 under the People's Republic of Kampuchea. Renamed Royal University of Phnom Penh in 1996. Today the largest university in Cambodia with three faculties (Science, Social Sciences and Humanities, Education) plus the Institute of Foreign Languages (IFL) and the Centre for Khmer Studies. ~20,000+ students. Strong programmes in sciences, education, humanities, and Khmer studies.
