THE OLDEST MODERN UNIVERSITY IN CHINA — founded 3 July 1898 by Emperor Guangxu as the Imperial University of Peking (京师大学堂) during the Hundred Days' Reform. Renamed National Peking University in 1912 after the Republic of China was established. Located on the beautiful Yan Yuan (Yan Garden) campus in Haidian District, Beijing — a former Qing imperial garden that was the original Yenching University campus before Yenching was integrated into PKU in 1952. PKU is widely considered China's premier humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences university (Tsinghua dominates engineering). ~46,000+ students.
