Founded 1898 (chartered as the Imperial University of Peking / 京师大学堂 / Jīngshī Dàxuétáng on 3 July 1898 by Emperor Guangxu during the Hundred Days' Reform — the FIRST MODERN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY in China; renamed National Peking University / 北京大学 in 1912 after the Republic of China was established; the Yenching University campus at Yan Yuan (former Qing imperial garden) was integrated into PKU in 1952 during the Soviet-influenced HE restructuring).
