Founded 1911 (chartered as Tsinghua College / 清華學堂 by the late Qing dynasty as a preparatory school using funds from the Boxer Indemnity Scholarship Program — paid by the Qing government as war reparations after the Boxer Rebellion 1900, with the funds returned by the United States in 1908 to be used for educating Chinese students at American universities; renamed Tsinghua School 1912, National Tsinghua University 1928; relocated to Kunming during the Sino-Japanese War as part of National Southwestern Associated University 1937-1946; restored to Beijing 1946; reorganised after 1952 as a polytechnic; restored to comprehensive university status from 1978 onwards). China's leading STEM and comprehensive research university, widely considered the #1 university in mainland China and consistently ranked top-20 globally. Located on the historic Tsinghua Yuan estate in Haidian District, Beijing — near the ruins of Yuanmingyuan (Old Summer Palace).
