China's leading STEM and comprehensive research university, widely considered the #1 university in mainland China and consistently ranked top-20 globally. Located on the historic Tsinghua Yuan estate in Haidian District, Beijing — near the ruins of Yuanmingyuan (Old Summer Palace). Founded 1911 as Tsinghua College — a preparatory school established with Boxer Indemnity Scholarship Program funds to prepare Chinese students for American university studies. Renamed Tsinghua School 1912 and National Tsinghua University 1928. Relocated to Kunming during the Sino-Japanese War 1937-1946 as part of the legendary National Southwestern Associated University (Lianda) with Peking and Nankai. Restored to Beijing 1946. Reorganised in 1952 as a polytechnic during the Soviet-influenced higher-education restructuring (its arts and sciences faculties were transferred to PKU and others).
