Founded in 1862 as the Riga Polytechnic, Riga Technical University is the OLDEST higher education institution in Latvia (predating the University of Latvia, which absorbed parts of the Polytechnic in 1919 before RTU re-established independently in 1958/1990). Approximately 15,000 students. Latvia's leading technical university. Distinguished engineering and architecture heritage; notable alumni include Friedrich Zander (Latvian-German space-flight pioneer, inspiration for Soviet rocketry) and Wilhelm Ostwald (Chemistry Nobel 1909 — studied at Riga Polytechnic).
