Founded 1976 as a branch of the University of Tripoli; chartered as an independent university in 1983 by Resolution 187/1983 of the General People's Committee. Largest university in southern Libya (Fezzan region), with 22 faculties and 7 specialised research centres serving the southern municipalities. Granted NCQAA institutional accreditation in 2020 and ranked first place among Libyan universities for 2020. Located near Sebha International Airport.
