Malaysia's NATIONAL UNIVERSITY — chartered 18 May 1970 specifically to be the FIRST FULLY BAHASA MALAYSIA-MEDIUM UNIVERSITY in Malaysia, established in the wake of the 1969 ethnic riots when post-independence Malay-language nationalism intensified. 'Kebangsaan' = 'national' in Malay. Located at the 'university town' of Bangi, Selangor, ~35 km south of Kuala Lumpur. ~27,000+ students across 13 faculties: Economics and Management, Education, Engineering and Built Environment, Information Science and Technology, Islamic Studies (premier Islamic Studies faculty in MY public HE), Law, Pharmacy, Science and Technology, Social Sciences and Humanities, Dentistry, Medicine, and Health Sciences (UKM Medical Centre is a major teaching hospital), and Engineering. Bahasa Malaysia is the primary instruction language with English used in many graduate programmes. Designated RESEARCH UNIVERSITY (RU) by MOHE.
