Founded 1949 (chartered as the University of Malaya in Singapore on 8 October 1949 through merger of King Edward VII College of Medicine 1905 and Raffles College 1928 — both established under British colonial rule; split into University of Malaya Kuala Lumpur and University of Singapore in 1962 when Singapore prepared to leave Malaysia; the Kuala Lumpur branch became simply University of Malaya / Universiti Malaya after 1962 — Malaysia's OLDEST university). Malaysia's OLDEST and most prestigious university — chartered 8 October 1949 in Singapore through merger of King Edward VII College of Medicine (founded 1905 — Malaysia/Singapore's first medical school) and Raffles College (founded 1928). Both predecessor institutions were established under British colonial rule. The University of Malaya was split in 1962 into the Kuala Lumpur branch (which became today's Universiti Malaya) and the Singapore branch (which became today's National University of Singapore — NUS) when Singapore prepared to leave Malaysia. ~22,000+ students across 13 faculties + several academies and centres. Designated RESEARCH UNIVERSITY (Universiti Penyelidikan) by MOHE 2006 — Malaysia's elite top tier.
