AccreditationDepartment of Higher Education and Training (DHET), Republic of South Africa — the national government department responsible for university recognition and the post-school education sector. Higher-education quality assurance is delegated to the Council on Higher Education (CHE), established 1998 under the Higher Education Act (Act 101 of 1997), and its operational arm the Higher Education Quality Committee (HEQC). Programmes are registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
Founded 2005 (by merger of Rand Afrikaans University, Wits Technikon, and Vista University Soweto/East Rand campuses, under the post-apartheid HE restructuring). Major comprehensive university located in Johannesburg (Gauteng), formed 2005 through the post-apartheid higher-education restructuring as a merger of three predecessor institutions: Rand Afrikaans University (RAU, founded 1968), Technikon Witwatersrand (founded 1925 as the Witwatersrand Technical Institute), and Vista University's Soweto and East Rand campuses (Vista University was a multi-campus institution serving township students 1981-2004). As a 'comprehensive' university model, UJ offers both traditional academic and career-oriented vocational programmes. Nine faculties: Art, Design and Architecture; Education; Engineering and the Built Environment; Health Sciences; Humanities; Law; Management; Science; and the Johannesburg Business School. Four campuses: Auckland Park Kingsway (main), Auckland Park Bunting Road, Doornfontein, and Soweto. Largest contact-mode university in South Africa by enrolment (~50,000 students). Strong commitment to transformation and access in the post-apartheid era.
Always confirm a university's current accreditation with
the named national authority, and that the qualification is recognised in
the country where you intend to use it, before enrolling or paying any
fees. AlmiStudy records information to help you check — it is not an
endorsement.
Why this is free
AlmiStudy is part of AlmiWorld. It is free because its purpose is to
help people find their way to education — and the wider project
supports the Shamool Foundation, a free school for street children in
Lahore (60 students, lunch, books and uniforms provided).
