University of Pretoria (UP)

Founded 1908 (as Pretoria branch of the Transvaal University College); became autonomous as Transvaal University College Pretoria 1910; reorganised as University of Pretoria 1930. Major public research university located in Pretoria (the administrative capital of South Africa). Major research university with strong agricultural sciences, veterinary medicine, engineering, and business programmes. Historically Afrikaans-medium; now offers programmes in both English and Afrikaans, with English being the predominant medium of instruction. One of the largest residential universities in South Africa.
