Chartered 1948 as TAJIK STATE UNIVERSITY by Soviet Council of Ministers as the Tajik SSR's flagship comprehensive university (Soviet Union's policy was one major university per republic — Moscow, Kyiv, Tashkent, Dushanbe, etc.). Renamed Tajik National University 2008 post-independence. ~22,000+ students. 17 faculties including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Biology, Philology, History, Economics, Law, Journalism, International Relations. Tajik + Russian instruction. CRITICAL: TNU was site of major events during 1992-1997 Civil War — student protests Feb 1990, ethnic clashes affected campus.
