AccreditationTanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) — established under the Universities Act 2005 (Cap. 346) as the national regulator for university education in Tanzania, replacing the Higher Education Accreditation Council (HEAC) established 1995. TCU is responsible for recognising, registering, and accrediting universities, university colleges, and centres operating in mainland Tanzania. Zanzibar has its own complementary Zanzibar Higher Education Council (ZHEC) for institutions on the islands.
Founded 1961 (as University College Dar es Salaam, affiliated with the University of London); became part of the University of East Africa 1963 (with Makerere and Nairobi); fully independent University of Dar es Salaam 1970. Tanzania flagship and oldest university, located on the Mlimani campus in Dar es Salaam. Founded 29 June 1961 (5 months before Tanganyika independence) as University College Dar es Salaam affiliated with the University of London. From 1963 to 1970 it was part of the University of East Africa federation alongside Makerere University College (Uganda) and the University College Nairobi (Kenya). Became the autonomous University of Dar es Salaam in 1970 following the dissolution of the federation. Hill-top Mlimani campus overlooks Dar es Salaam. Multi-faculty: Arts and Social Sciences, Science, Commerce and Management, Law, Education, Engineering, Aquatic Sciences and Technology, Informatics and Virtual Education. In 2007 spun off Muhimbili (medical sciences) and Ardhi (built environment) as separate universities. Languages: English-medium with Kiswahili widely used. Walter Bgoya, Mwalimu Nyerere associates, and many East African intellectual leaders are alumni.
