Azerbaijan's premier petroleum, energy, and engineering university, located in Baku — the BIRTHPLACE OF THE MODERN COMMERCIAL PETROLEUM INDUSTRY (the world's first commercial oil well was drilled at Bibi-Heybat in 1846, a decade before Pennsylvania's Drake well). Founded 16 November 1920 as Baku Polytechnic Institute, building on Baku's already-mature petroleum-industry expertise. Renamed Azerbaijan Industrial Institute 1930, Azerbaijan State Oil Academy 1992, and ASOIU in 2014. Among the world's oldest petroleum-engineering universities.
