Founded 1920 (chartered as Baku Polytechnic Institute on 16 November 1920, immediately after Soviet takeover, building on existing Baku petroleum-industry expertise; renamed Azerbaijan Industrial Institute 1930; renamed Azerbaijan State Oil Academy 1992; renamed Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University 2014). Azerbaijan's premier petroleum, energy, and engineering university, located in Baku — the BIRTHPLACE OF THE MODERN COMMERCIAL PETROLEUM INDUSTRY (the world's first commercial oil well was drilled at Bibi-Heybat in 1846, a decade before Pennsylvania's Drake well).
