Founded 1919 (chartered as Baku State University by Decree No. 735 of the Parliament of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic on 1 September 1919 — opened with 4 faculties and 1,094 students; survived the Soviet takeover in April 1920 to become the foundational university of Azerbaijani higher education). Azerbaijan's flagship and oldest modern university, located in Baku. Founded on 1 September 1919 by Decree No. 735 of the Parliament of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR, 1918-1920) — only months before the Soviet Red Army takeover in April 1920. Opened with 4 faculties (History-Philology, Physics-Mathematics, Law, Medicine) and 1,094 students. SURVIVED the Soviet takeover and continued as the foundational university of Azerbaijani HE through Soviet era and post-1991 independence. ~17,000+ students across 17 faculties spanning Mathematics and Mechanics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geology, Geography, History, Philology, Oriental Studies (notable given Caspian-region position), Library and Information Sciences, Law, Journalism, International Relations and Economics, Theology, Social Sciences and Psychology, Applied Mathematics and Cybernetics, and the Faculty of Ecology and Soil Sciences.
