Azerbaijan's flagship and oldest modern university, located in Baku. Founded on 1 September 1919 by Decree No. 735 of the Parliament of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR, 1918-1920) — only months before the Soviet Red Army takeover in April 1920. Opened with 4 faculties (History-Philology, Physics-Mathematics, Law, Medicine) and 1,094 students.
