Founded on 7 April 1348 by Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV (Karel IV) with a papal bull from Pope Clement VI, Charles University is the OLDEST university in Central Europe and one of the oldest in continuous operation in the world. Named after its founder. Approximately 50,000 students across 17 faculties — Czech Republic's largest and flagship university. Consistently QS top 250 globally; Czech Republic's only consistent QS top-300 institution. Distinguished alumni and faculty across seven centuries include: Jan Hus (the early 15th-century religious reformer whose teachings preceded the Protestant Reformation by a century — he was burned at the stake at the Council of Constance in 1415); Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler (both worked in Prague during the Rudolfine era around 1600); František Palacký (founder of modern Czech historiography); Albert Einstein (held a chair in theoretical physics 1911-1912 in Prague); Franz Kafka (law degree 1906); Václav Havel (briefly studied here); Six Nobel Prize laureates including Jaroslav Heyrovský (Chemistry 1959 for polarography). 🕯️ Historic context: Closed by Nazi occupiers on 17 November 1939 after student protests; 9 student leaders executed and ~1,200 students sent to Sachsenhausen. Jan Palach, a Charles University student, self-immolated in Wenceslas Square on 16 January 1969 in protest against the Soviet occupation — he became a national symbol of resistance. 🤝 Pakistani context: Offers English-medium General Medicine (MD) programme recognised by Pakistan Medical Commission; active Pakistani student community across the five medical faculties (Prague + Hradec Králové + Plzeň).
Always confirm a university's current accreditation with
the named national authority, and that the qualification is recognised in
the country where you intend to use it, before enrolling or paying any
fees. AlmiStudy records information to help you check — it is not an
endorsement.
