Founded in 1919 as the University of Agriculture in Brno, renamed in 1995 after Gregor Johann Mendel (1822-1884) — the Augustinian monk who, working in his garden at St. Thomas's Abbey in Brno, discovered the laws of genetic inheritance through his pea-plant experiments (1856-1863) and is considered the FOUNDER OF MODERN GENETICS. Approximately 10,000 students. Czech Republic's principal agricultural and forestry university.
