Founded in 1707 by Emperor Joseph I as the Engineering Professorship in Prague (the oldest engineering school in Central Europe), the Czech Technical University in Prague (ČVUT) is one of the oldest institutes of technology in continuous operation in the world. Approximately 20,000 students. Distinguished alumni include Christian Doppler (the Austrian physicist who described the Doppler effect — taught here as professor of mathematics 1841-1847), František Křižík (electrical engineer and inventor), and many of Central Europe's pioneers in engineering.
