Originally founded in 1765 by Pasquale Paoli (1725-1807), Corsican national hero during the brief Corsican Republic period (1755-1769) — closed when France annexed Corsica in 1769, refounded 1981. Approximately 4,500 students. Corsica's only university. Programmes available in French and Corsican (a Romance language related to Italian).
