Formerly known as the Higher Education Accreditation Commission (HEAC); renamed and reorganised under Law No. 11 of 2020. AQACHEI was awarded full 10-year Recognition Status by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) in 2023, the first such recognition in the post-pandemic WFME programme.

'Al-Zaytoonah' means 'the olive' in Arabic. NOT to be confused with the older Al-Zaytuna University of Tunisia (the Muslim world's oldest theological university).
