Founded in 1961 as the Higher Pedagogical Institute, becoming Plovdiv University in 1972, named after Paisii Hilendarski (1722-1773) — the Bulgarian monk whose 'Istoriya Slavyanobalgarska' (Slavic-Bulgarian History, 1762) sparked the Bulgarian National Revival movement. Approximately 17,000 students. Bulgaria's second-largest university.
