Founded on 1 October 1888 by Bulgarian intellectuals shortly after Bulgaria's liberation from five centuries of Ottoman rule (1396-1878), Sofia University 'St. Kliment Ohridski' is the OLDEST higher education institution in Bulgaria and the country's flagship. Named after Saint Kliment of Ohrid (840-916 CE), a disciple of Saints Cyril and Methodius and one of the founders of the Bulgarian literary tradition who developed the Cyrillic alphabet. Approximately 21,000 students across 16 faculties. The iconic main building (1924-1934) was financed by the bequest of brothers Evlogi and Hristo Georgiev — whose sculptures grace the façade. Consistently ranked among the top 4% of world universities by QS — Bulgaria's only consistent QS-ranked institution. Distinguished alumni and faculty span the entirety of modern Bulgarian intellectual history. ⚠️ NOTE: Sofia University was MISSING from the AlmiStudy collector file — added as critical curator entry given its #1 status in Bulgaria. Offers Bachelor's and Master's programmes in English in Medicine, Pharmacy, European Studies, African Studies, and Philosophy.
Always confirm a university's current accreditation with
the named national authority, and that the qualification is recognised in
the country where you intend to use it, before enrolling or paying any
fees. AlmiStudy records information to help you check — it is not an
endorsement.
