Founded in 1896 as the State Drawing School (one of Sofia University's contemporaneous institutions), becoming the National Academy of Art in 1995. Bulgaria's oldest and principal fine arts academy. Approximately 1,200 students. Particular strength in restoration and conservation (Orthodox Christian icon tradition) alongside contemporary fine arts.
