Founded in 1963, Veliko Tarnovo University is named after Saints Cyril and Methodius — the 9th-century Byzantine missionaries who created the Glagolitic alphabet (precursor to Cyrillic) and brought literacy in Slavic to the Bulgarian and broader Slavic worlds. Approximately 13,000 students. Located in Veliko Tarnovo — the medieval Bulgarian capital (1185-1396) and one of the country's most historically significant cities.
