Ghent University (Universiteit Gent / UGent)

Founded in 1817 by King William I of the Netherlands as the State University of Ghent, the Universiteit Gent (UGent) is Belgium's second-largest university. Approximately 50,000 students. In the QS World University Rankings, typically in the top 100-150 globally. Notable alumni include Maurice Maeterlinck (Nobel Literature 1911), Corneille Heymans (Nobel Medicine 1938 for the discovery of the role of the sinus and aortic nerves in the regulation of respiration), and Jozef Schell (one of the founders of modern plant biotechnology). UGent was originally Latin-medium, became French-medium during the 19th century, and was made fully Dutch-medium in 1930 — an important milestone in the Flemish movement for cultural recognition within Belgium. Today: bilingual English-Dutch instruction at Master's level, strongly research-oriented, particularly distinguished in bioscience, veterinary sciences, and the humanities.
