Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB)

Founded in 1834 as part of the Université Libre de Bruxelles, VUB became fully independent in 1969 when the linguistic split created separate Dutch-speaking (VUB) and French-speaking (ULB) institutions. Approximately 22,000 students from 145+ countries — making VUB one of the most international universities in Belgium proportionally. Founded on the principle of 'vrij onderzoek' (free inquiry) — independence from religious or ideological authority, reflecting the institution's secular, humanist origins in opposition to the then-dominant Catholic universities. Strong English-medium Master's and PhD programmes; particular international visibility in Brussels Studies, EU studies, applied mechanics, and medical sciences. VUB shares the Brussels Health Campus with ULB, including the joint hospital UZ Brussel.
